Fishing
In Indonesia, they have a strong connection to the Earth and the water surrounding their islands. They believe that the water that surrounds the island belongs to them. They call it Tanah Air Kita, or Our Land and Water. Due to this large amount of water, there are lots of fish, particularly tuna, and with that comes the commercial fishing. For hundreds of years, natives have fished on and around Indonesia, but now, Malaysians are starting to fish illegally within Indonesian waters.

This has become a problem, because not only are they taking fish from under legal Indonesian fisherman, they're also not recording their catches, which can lead to misinterpretation of how many tuna there are left in the ocean. This can lead to endangerment and eventually extinction, which would happen if people believed there are more fish than there are, and continue to fish. The fish wouldn't reproduce and would in the end die out. This is connecting to the nation as a whole because the end of commercial fishing would be a large drop in their economy and the an animal would be extinct. The people of Indonesia greatly appreciate this resource thats so helpful, and has made this group of islands what it is, through fishing and oil, and to know that another group of people has exploited this resource probably is quite angering. Although some people may not support the commercial fishing industry, I'm sure even less support the illegal fishing industry.
These are tuna that were caught in Indonesia.

Oil

Oil has always been a precious resource, and when some was found in 1990 by Dutch scientists, in Indonesia , they thought they had struck gold. Originally, this had made the nation rich but in past years, oil quotas have not been met and the GDP has suffered a blow. Recently, despite the oil found in the past, there has been no more exploration and the government control of the programs is weak. Despite the fact that the oil industry within Indonesia has declined massively, the oil consumption rate has increased. The lack of oil being produced, and the amount being shipped in, has resulted in a decline of the oil money contributing to the economy. In 1990, 40% was from oil revenue, but now, only 13% is from oil coming from within Indonesia. This obviously would affect everybody within the country. The economy affects how almost everybody interacts with the goods and how much the dollar is worth based on what things are sold for how much monetary values. The economy affects everybody that interacts with goods using the basic monetary form, in this case the Indonesian Rupiah. This natural resource; part of the Indonesian environment has affected the people of Indonesia and will continue to affect them; especially if they're able to find more oil, and drill for it, then they could become very wealthy. This could also happen with all their other natural resources, such as coal and tin.
Natural Disasters
Being on the ocean and living on an island results in having some serious natural disasters. On average, about 2,360 are killed every year from an earthquake. But in December of 2004, there was a tsunami that shook people's lives up, for the worse, and eventually the better.

On the night of December 26, 2004, over 22,000 people were killed by an enormous wave that swept over the islands. It was a tsunami. This caused lots of tension between groups, specifically the main government and a group in Aceh, which had particularly hard losses. The people of Aceh had been fighting for freedom, and the government had sent in armed forces. After the tsunami, the government agreed to pull the military, if the people would accept partial freedom, which they did.
This shows a strong connection to the land because two groups that had been having a disagreement for a while, but after this massive act of they were able to settle their differences, and try to rebuild. They reconnected to each other and to the land, in order to start to once again help their forests grow and use their natural resources. They came together to reestablish their connection to the ocean and once again start fishing. This is the ultimate way that the people of Indonesia interact with their environment. They interact with each other to use their environment to help people, even though it does cause great turmoil.
